SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – One in 10 Americans has symptoms of flat feet, according to Dr. Phinit Phisitkul.

Dr. Phisitkul, an orthopedic surgeon with CNOS, said most adults with flat feet start developing it in their childhood.

“They can look back to the parents, the parents usually have a flat arch too. And the biggest factor is probably the tendon contractor. A lot of patients will have tightness in the calf muscle, kind of in the back of the ankle area, that part has pulled into the foot and ankle for the lifetime and that caused the arch to collapse further,” said Dr. Phisitkul.

Dr. Phisitkul said there are multiple treatments for flat foot deformity. He said if caught young and early, insoles, physical therapy and corrective exercises can be helpful. After that, surgery comes into play.

“When the collapse is not at its peak, we can do smaller surgery to help improve the condition. When the collapse is getting worse and worse, 5-10 years into the disease, we have more concrete reconstruction surgery that can help which would involve more surgery,” said Dr. Phisitkul.

Dr. Phisitkul explains, if not treated properly, flat feet progress into a complete collapse of the arch.

“Patients sometimes would be walking on this bone and that bone which is not supposed to be weight-bearing on the outside. When the joint collapses further, the two bonds would crumble together like that, and cause impingement,” Dr. Phisitkul.

He recommends if you are active and feel pain in your feet, or notice your child has a flatter-looking arch, to get in and see a specialist.
