SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Flaking, peeling, redness… If your skin looks almost lizard-like, you need to restore hydration. It can be difficult to keep 24-hour moisture locked in during winter.
Dr. Raymond Kuwahara, a dermatologist at CNOS, said it comes down to what moisturizer you’re reaching for.
“Especially in the winter, you want to use thicker moisturizers like emollients and creams such as Eucerin. Even Vaseline. We recommend thicker ointments during the winter, it keeps the skin more hydrated and protected. During the summer you could use lotions, lotions are easier to spread you could use it in wider areas,” said Dr. Kuwahara.
If you have sensitive skin or allergies, avoid scented creams.
If you’re not a fan of the oily feeling you get after applying moisturizer, Dr. Kuwahara has a tip.
“Wipe off the excess with a towel or even a paper towel. You’ll still have enough on the skin and get the protection you need,” said Dr. Kuwahara.
You can prevent severe dryness or cracked skin by just covering up.
“Wear gloves when you’re outside for protection, use the emollient or the cream underneath the gloves. Try to stay in warmer areas. The low humidity is causing it, especially in the winter. You get cold dry air, you heat it up and the air inside the building has very low humidity which is gonna make your hands very dry and cracked,” said Dr. Kuwahara.
Dr. Kuwahara said it is time to see a doctor if you experience severe itching or breakdown of the skin.
